First Grid Intertie

In March 2006, Right Honorable Perry Christie, Prime Minister of The Bahamas, inaugurated the first grid-connected renewable energy system in the history of The Bahamas. The project was a collaborative effort between Cape Eleuthera Institute, Cape Systems, Bahamas Electricity Corporation, The Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Energy and Environment. This inauguration marked the culmination of more than five years of work to bring this pilot project to life. Minister of Energy and Environment, Honorable Dr. Marcus Bethel, commented saying, “My Ministry is supportive of initiatives in alternate sources of energy and support your efforts in this regard.”

Grid-connected renewable energy systems, uncommon in most Caribbean countries, are the most efficient, cost effective way to utilize renewable energy on a home or business scale. This process also opens the door for larger, utility-scale projects featuring power purchase agreements between the utility and private power producers.
